These inverters allow a photovoltaic array to be used in synchronised connection with a grid supply. No battery store is required.
Power generated is first used by the house loads etc. and any surplus exported (sold) to the grid. At night, or when power consumption exceeds power generated, power is imported from the grid as normal.
In PV applications the inverter will automatically adjust the PV array loading to provide peak efficiency of the solar panels by means of maximum power point tracking (MPPT). Inverters automatically shutdown in the event of:

There are costs associated with connection and metering to/from the grid. Also, the rate paid for electricity generated is presently considerably less than that charged for electricity consumed.
