Demonstration Site

In 1997 Wind & Sun moved to the Humber Marsh Nature Reserve in Herefordshire, a 13 acre wetland and environmental education centre which we own and manage.  We have a workshop, showroom, test, training and demonstration site, where many items can be seen on working display.

Installations include: Grid connected Wind Turbine; Grid Connected PV arrays both above roof, roof integrated & tracking; stand-alone PV systems; solar pumps & fountains; battery systems; inverter test facilities.

New Facilities

Wind & Sun have expanded its operations. Building work is now completed to provide additional space for extending the demonstration and training services available. The new building incorporates a new mechanical workshop, warehousing and an expanded office area.  This has enabled us to rationalise our existing space to provide better electronic service workshop, increased showroom area and two classrooms for training and visitor reception.  

The building itself has been constructed using green building techniques.  In order to keep heating requirements to a minimum it incorporates a high degree of thermal mass wrapped in high levels of Warmcell recycled paper insulation and utilises large south facing windows to maximise passive solar gains.  The upstairs office incorporates green oak cruck frames to create a wonderful open space.  All electricity requirements will of course be met by our on-site wind and PV generation!

Various types of PV panels have been added to the rooftop system already installed. Architects and Planners will be able to gauge the visual appearance, whilst electricians and roofers can be trained on actual equipment. Various wind and PV systems are installed around our site. From simple solar fountains and battery charging stand-alone systems to grid-connected wind turbines and roof integrated PV arrays. These systems are used to meet electrical requirements of our offices, showrooms and workshops. They are also used for demonstration and training together with product or system development.

We have installed a 1kWp PV array using 12 x BP585S modules and a Sunny Boy 1100E inverter on a dual axis tracker.  this enables the PV array to follow the sun throughout the dayand so maximise output. This is being used to provide power for our new building and it'soutput is being compared with that of a similar fixed array on an existing building. 

A Sunny Beam Display unit is being used to monitor performance which so far has been excellent! Apart from providing a convenient means of mounting the array we expect the tracker to give an approx. 30% yearly power improvement over the fixed array.
