On-Grid Wind Turbines
Wind turbines can be connected to the grid by synchronising with the public electricity supply. This can be done in two ways:
a) Using an AC generator, connected via dedicated synchronisation and protection relays
b) Inverter connected
Whenever it is windy, power generated is first used by local loads, reducing power consumption from the grid with any high wind surplus then being exported to the electricity company. In times of low wind or when power consumption increases power is imported as normal.
Wind & Sun worked with SMA to develop the successful 'Windy Boy' inverters and we supplied these for use in conjunction with the turbines below. However, since manufacture was discontinued we have yet to find a good alternative.
